A small group of Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug supporters gathered outside the Valhalla Inn Wednesday as part of a national protest lobbying for aboriginal rights and action from the McGuinty government.

The annual Mines and Minerals Symposium is being held inside at the hotel.

The local group is hoping its action sends a message to the mining industry. Platinex Inc. the company involved in a long-running court dispute with K.I. First Nation is not present at the symposium but rally spokesman Dean Cromarty says he blames the entire mining industry for the jailing of the six K.I. leaders found guilty of civil contempt in March.

Six members of the K.I. Band are serving six-month jail sentences for refusing to obey a court order to allow Platinex Inc. to resume exploration activity near Big Trout Lake.

Ryerson Students Centre in Toronto was the stage for a larger assembly of protestors and National Chief Phil Fontaine is expected to address the participants.
